Dublin Institute of Technology (commonly referred to as DIT), established as an autonomous institution under the DIT Act in 1992, but its origins go back to 1887, is one of the largest higher education institutions in Ireland.
DIT is spread across 10 locations in Dublin city, which are currently being amalgamated into a central campus at Grangegorman.
It aims to achieve this in an innovative, responsive, caring and flexible learning environment with state-of-the-art facilities and the most advanced technology available. It is committed to provide access to higher education for students of different ages and backgrounds and to achieve quality and excellence in all aspects of its work. This commitment extends to the provision of teaching, research, development and consultancy services for industry and society, with due regard to the technological, commercial, social and cultural needs of the community it serves.
As a modern university, it places considerable emphasis on delivering practical, hands-on teaching designed to meet the needs of industry. It offers approximately 150-degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across faculties of Arts, Tourism, Business, Engineering & the Built Environment, and Sciences and Health.
DIT also offers support and facilities to students showing entrepreneurial spirit looking to and set up their own business.
The university also prides itself on its work in the local community, where it works with the Access and Civic Engagement service to offer underrepresented groups the chance to study and learn.
Outside of the classroom, students can choose from 150 sports clubs and societies to get involved with on campus.
The minimum level required for programmes is International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
6.0 or equivalent for the overall average score and a score not lower than 5.5 in each category.
Certain courses may have higher requirements.
Applicants should have an honours bachelor degree (2.2 grade or higher), or equivalent, in any relevant discipline. Non-standard applications are also considered.
Over the next few years all the DIT campuses, from all over Dublin city, will be merging onto one location. Grangegorman is situated just on the outskirts of the city centre, and it will offer students the unique experience of studying at a newly developed third level institute.
The new campus will provide student residencies on site. The student residences will offer a range of housing formats from 6 bed and 3 bed apartments to private studio/family units. Ground level spaces ofr dining, social and study lounges and related shops serve to activate the Serpentinte Walk on the south side and St Brendan's on the north side.
For many people, coming to college means living away from home for the first time. We understand that you would like to live in a place that is clean, modern, comfortable, safe, not too expensive, within easy reach of all your activities and preferably with other students who share the same lifestyle as your own. Depending on your circumstances and/or preferences you may chose campus style or private rented accommodation.
Please be advised that DIT do not inspect or recommend accommodation and are not responsible for the accuracy of any information provided by the supplier
Campus Style Accommodation
This accommodation is purpose built to suit student’s needs. Each complex has their own layout but generally, students have single or twin rooms’ and share a kitchen and living area. The residences are safe and normally provide 24 hour security. This allows students to live independently in a well-managed and safe environment designed with their needs in mind.
Block Booked Campus Style Accommodation
Until new student residences at Grangegorman are complete DIT have block booked bed spaces with a number of external providers of campus style accommodation. These providers give preferences to DIT students while accommodation is available. Providers try to place students of similar courses and DIT campuses together. DIT has a residential assistant in some of the larger complexes.
Alternative Campus Style Accommodation
There are several other campus style residences suitable for DIT students which have not been block booked by DIT.
Private Rented Accommodation
If Campus style accommodation does not suit you there are other options. You can rent a house or flat on your own or with friends, stay with a host family or rent a room in shared accommodation.

Dublin Institute of Technology ( or DIT) is located in the centre of Dublin, Ireland's capital city. It is one of the largest higher education institutions in Ireland. Despite being established in its present form in 1992, the institution can trace an unbroken history back to the establishment in 1887 of the first technical education institution in Ireland.
DIT continues to build on its long tradition of providing education from certificate to doctorate level. It is well known for its programmes in Architecture, Engineering, Science, Marketing, Hospitality, Music, Optometry, Pharmaceuticals, Construction, Digital Media and Journalism.
The Institute combines the academic excellence of a traditional university with professional, career-oriented learning, preparing graduates for productive leadership roles. The core values reflected in its mission emphasize student-centred learning, useful knowledge, rigorous processes of discovery and critical enquiry, and support for entrepreneurship and diversity.
DIT comprises of four colleges (Engineering & Built Environment, Business, Sciences & Health and Arts & Tourism) and a Graduate Research School. There are twenty-seven academic schools, four major research institutes, many research centres and groups and various technology transfer and commercial units.
The Institute awards Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. It has autonomous authority to make its own academic awards. As its awards comply fully with the national qualifications framework of the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland, they are fully recognised internationally.
DIT also validates programmes provided by other institutions such as the Digital Skills Academy in Dublin as part of the pathways to work initiative and the Brighton Institute of Modern Music BA course.
There are 20,000 students registered in DIT, and over 2000 members of staff. Nearly 20% of the student body comes from outside Ireland, creating a culturally diverse and stimulating teaching and research environment.
DIT undertakes research that is nationally relevant, internationally competitive and strategically important. Research is conducted through two research institutes – Focas, which concentrates on new materials and technologies and the Environmental Health Sciences Institute (EHSI) - and in 16 designated centres organised around strengths in food and health sciences; social, economic and business development; environmental sustainability; information and communication technologies; and creative arts and media.
Embedded in Dublin city centre, DIT has built very strong and diverse links with its neighbouring communities and schools. In addition to bilateral institutional links, DIT participates as a full member of the European University Association (EUA) and the International Association of Universities (IAU). DIT has student exchange programmes with universities in India, China, Brazil, Australia, USA and across Europe. DIT is one of the lead partners in the Mozambique Eyecare Project. Additionally, there are strong links with Columbia College Chicago in design and media and with Purdue University across many disciplines including a joint Masters Degree programme. There are strong student and staff exchanges with Grenoble School of Management. DIT accredits programmes at Middle East College in Oman.
